A. As per the Purnimant Calender, the month of Shravana starts on July 6th and ends on July 27th.
The important dates in Shravan as per Purnimant are:
July 6 – First Shravan Somwar (First Monday and the first day of Shravan)
July 13 – Second Shravan Somwar
July 20 – Third Shravan Somwar
July 27 – Fourth Shravan Somwar
B. However, as per the Amavasyant calendar (the Hindu calendar in which a month ends with Amavasya or the new moon day), the month of Shravan starts on July 23 and ends on August 19. It is followed by devotees in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
July 21 – Shravan month begins
July 27 – First Shravan Somwar
August 3 – Second Shravan Somwar
August 10 – Third Shravan Somwar
August 17 – Fourth Shravan Somwar
August 19 – Shravan month ends
The end of Sawan is celebrated with festivals like Krishna Janmashtami, Teej and Rakshabandhan, Naag Panchamiin places like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh.
Pujan Vidhi: (On Shrawan Monday's)
- On the Mondays of Shravan, people are advised to observe fast from sunrise to sunset. Though a person can perform the Abhishek of a Shivlinga with milk, fasting devotees must not drink milk.
- People should not drink alcohol and eat non-vegetarian food during Shravan. The devotees should also avoid eating brinjal or eggplant as it is considered impure according to the Puranas.
- The devotees are also advised to listen to the Monday fast story/Vrat Katha after worshipping Lord Shiva.
- During the Shravan month, devotees should wake up in the Brahma Muhurta on Mondays.
- The devotees are also advised to not use Haldi or turmeric while performing the Abhishek.
- To spread a positive environment in the house, the devotees are also advised to sprinkle Ganga water or offer milk to Goddess Parvati and Lord Nandi.
- While worshipping Lord Shiva, you must offer him Bel Patra or Bel leaves, Dhatura fruit, bhang, sandalwood, akshat or rice.
- The devotees should also practice self-restraint and follow the rules of Brahmacharya during the month of Shravan.
